Alfie Lyons is the most likely suspect. She wasn't sexually assaulted, but she had a series of ongoing disputes with Alfie. And Alfie passed on a lot of info to Ian Bailey, setting him up as a patsy. Everyone on the Mizen suspects Alfie but keep throwing red herrings in (Wollny being the main one).

Her death was very violent & Ian Bailey is a very violent man. He seriously damaged his partner 3 times, which necessitated surgery.

Did Alfie Lyons, her neighbor, murder Sophie Toscan du Plantier?

Ian used to call on Alfie Lyons, from time to time. Sophie had a habit of not having curtains on her bedroom windows.

Did they discuss Sophie during their chats and did one of them get horny one night and "tried it on" & Sophie rejected them?

Ian was miles away, to get to that wild and lonely place would have taken a long time. Alfie was with his missus, presumably. Geraldine Comiskey has made a very compelling case for an argument erupting between Sophie and Alfie that morning, as he kept leaving the mutually shared farm gate open which annoyed Sophie as she was so worried about drug people coming by from little boats from the coastal inlets nearby, drugs being brought in from the Cork coast was a serious concern at that time, that’s why Sophie felt safer with the gate shut when Alfie often left it open which led to frequent arguments between Sophie and Alfie. The prognosis is that Alfie spontaneously attacked Sophie in a sudden fit of rage after she remonstrated with him yet again, one auspicious morning. This of course is just an alleged theory. Also, it is interesting that Ian Bailey was focused upon so much, maybe to deflect attention from Alfie who, as you say, might have planted the seeds of suspicion in the minds of the Gardai, to deflect away from himself. Or maybe the guy who committed suicide around that very time, after saying he had done ‘something terrible’. People living in small towns can have an insular, tribal mentality which focuses on the blow-in Ian Bailey rather than on one of their own ‘tribe’
